“It’s likely the disease existed in the population before this, but the heat sent it into overdrive and created this wave of death,” Neufeld says. “The effect was gruesome. The stars would develop white lesions and then begin to disintegrate to the point where their arms were independently walking away from their body in different directions. Eventually, they were reduced to a pile of goo.”
